Caring ministries

Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministry is a program that equips lay persons to provide distinctively Christian, one-to-one care to those in our church and in our community who are experiencing all kinds of life needs and circumstances. Stephen Ministers do not come equipped with a set of answers to the problems people face; instead they provide a safe place for care receivers to explore their problems and concerns in complete confidence. Stephen Ministers are caregivers; it is God alone who is the cure-giver.

For more information on the program itself, on becoming a Stephen Minister, or on obtaining the help of a Stephen Minister for yourself or for someone you know, please speak with one of the Stephen Ministry leaders (Mari Quint, Shirley Reid, or Ursula McLean), one of the ministers, or call the church office.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Are you a knitter or crocheter? We are looking for individuals of all ages to help the Church form a prayer shawl ministry. Knitters and crocheters (men and women) of all ages and ability levels are encouraged to participate in creating shawls that will be blessed by the church before they are passed on to members who are ill, recovering from an illness or surgery, coping with a loss or needing comfort in their lives.

This newly formed and growing ministry is open to anyone interested in participating. We encourage new knitters and crocheters as well as those with experience. All ages are welcome. Patterns and materials will be available at the meeting.

Please join us in this rewarding and meaningful ministry! For more information, please contact Tracy Russell (click HERE to email) or 410.467.8288.

Fellowship Opportunities

Candlelighters

Candlelighters is a small group for women who are searching for a place to nurture their spiritual life and get to know other women at Second Presbyterian at the same time. All women are welcome. The group meets the third Monday of each month during the school year.

A Search for Meaning: Theology and Our Lives
November topic: Predestination: What Is It, Anyway?

Predestination is one of the most misunderstood doctrines in Reformed Theology. Is predestination a way of explaining that every good or bad thing that happens is predetermined by God? Is it a way of saying that God is for some people and against others? Is it a way of explaining that some people are chosen by God and some people are not chosen?

Come explore these questions and more at Candlelighters’ November gathering on Monday, November 16, at 7 p.m.! We are an informal group of women who gather, discuss issues of faith, and get to know each other. We meet the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Questions? Contact Kate Foster Connors, 410.377.2261 or akfc@verizon.net.

Contact Kate Foster Connors at akfc@verizon.net for more information, location, and directions to the November meeting.

Transformers

Every other Friday in the Manse.

The Transformers are a group of young adult members and friends that meet regularly to study the Bible and participate in Christian fellowship together. The Transformers Bible Study meets every other week for an informal Bible study, either at church or hosted at a member’s house on a rotating basis. Sharing food and fellowship enhances our Bible study experience. The Transformers also organize fellowship events such as chili cook-offs, movie nights, and March madness parties to have fun and get to know one another better.

All are welcome to join us in our continuing Bible study and our many fellowship activities.

1Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. 2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing, and perfect will.
-Romans Ch. 12 v. 1-2, NIV

Wednesday Fellowship

This group of (slightly) older adults meets the third Wednesday of the month (except for summer), at noon in Smith Hall from September through June. We have lunch together (bring a sandwich; desserts and beverages are provided) and then have a program. Our topics are very diversified – a program on the refurbishing of the Statue of Liberty, programs from the Walters Art Museum, a columnist from Style Magazine and The Messenger - or concerts for special occasions. Please check back soon for our first program of the 2010 - 2011 season! All are warmly welcomed.
