deacons

What is a deacon?
Deacons are ordained officers of the church, elected by the congregation to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, the friendless, and any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.

From time to time they are delegated other duties by the Session; they maintain an active role in the life of the church; serve on various councils and committees of the church; and are represented at the meetings of the Session and Trustees.

Currently, 28 deacons at Second Church are assigned as leaders of parishes that include all members of the congregation. The parish organization is a means to create a church community where each member feels personally served. It is also a vehicle for communicating needs or concerns to the church staff.

If you, your family, friends, or any other member of the church community is in need of extra care: prayer requests, transportation needs, meals for difficult times, etc., please feel free to contact your deacon (see names listed under each parish on the deacon's bulletin board near the church office). Also, you may contact your deacon at any time to inquire about various activities at the church.

Food for Thought(fullness)
The goal of this committee is to provide a gift of caring concern to those with special needs. Members of the committee will provide a casserole, salad, etc. to families in bereavement, new parents, someone recently moved, or to someone with debilitating illness.

Please call the church office (410.467.4210) when this service could be of help to you or to anyone you feel would benefit by this service.

Memorial Service Receptions
The committee seeks to provide a comfortable and hospitable place, along with refreshments, for grieving family members, and greets family and friends before or after a memorial service.

When arranging a memorial service, you may request this service through the church office.

New Member Sponsors
The goal of this committee is to integrate new members into the life of the church as quickly as possible by phoning the new member immediately following the service at which they joined; offering to meet the new member at the church for the first Sunday that he/she is a member; introducing the new member to as many church members as possible; and inviting the new member to church functions, particularly the lunch following the Service for the Lord's Day on the third Sunday of the month.

New Parent Committee

The goal of this committee is to welcome newborns into our Second Family and to help the parents celebrate the new birth with a friendly visit and a basket of goodies.

Please call the church office to let us know about any new birth in our church family.
