Chancel Choir

The role of the adult choir per the Book of Order:

W-2.1004

Music as Prayer: Choir and Instrumental Music

“To lead the congregation in the singing of prayer is a primary role of the choir and other musicians. They also may pray on behalf of the congregation with introits, responses, and other musical forms. Instrumental music may be a form of prayer since words are not essential to prayer. In worship, music is not to be for entertainment or artistic display. Care should be taken that it not be used merely as a cover for silence. Music as prayer is to be a worthy offering to God on behalf of the people.”

The chancel (adult) choir is comprised primarily of volunteers with a core of professional singers. Second Presbyterian Church has a long history of excellent music tradition, and in fact, began this part of its ministry at the present location with a professional octet offering music to assist the congregation in prayer. The professional singers serve as section leaders, helping to teach volunteers and occasionally offer solo work. Most of these earn their principal living by singing (concerts, tours, recordings, opera and shows), and all have had extensive training and experience. Several teach singing also. The choir seeks to attain and maintain a high level of musicianship. The director of music recruits new members for the choir from time to time. Rehearsals are on Thursdays at 8 p.m. and on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. Regular attendance at all rehearsals as well as 11 a.m. Sunday and Holy Day services is required.

The chancel choir is directed by our music director, Philp Olsen.
